Gear Hobbing & Shaving of Drive and Idler Gears for the Hydraulic Industry
Tuson was contacted by an Illinois-based customer to fabricate the drive and idler gears depicted here. Manufacture of these gears required a high precision production environment, capable of recreating the complex features of the gear’s design. Application of our prior work experience and our advanced production equipment allowed us to deliver a high quality product to the customer.
We designed a fabrication process that used CNC-based turning, gear hobbing, shaving, and grinding machines, each performing a step of production of the drive and idler gears. We used 8620 alloy steel as the base material, which was heat treated for additional strength. Attention to surface finish, taper angles, and gage parameters was necessary during the fabrication process. Tolerances were held at ±0.0025mm on the 170mm long, 48mm in diameter gears, with surface finish ranging between 0.25 - 0.50 Ra. The gear quality met DIN 8 standard.
Volume orders of 30,000 pieces were completed by our facilities, with lead times of 3 months. All production was based off of customer supplied drawings. We delivered orders direct to the customer’s Illinois location.
